CHICAGO — A military-type armored vehicle parked in the Loop on Tuesday drew plenty of gawkers. The vehicle was used to chauffeur Winthrop Harbor Police Chief Joel Brumlik to a meeting with Cook County Homeland Security, and state and federal law enforcement officials. Winthrop Harbor police have been meeting with homeland security for the May 19-21 NATO and G-8 summits scheduled in Chicago. The black “Knight” was parked curbside in front of the Cook County office building at 69 W. Washington St., through the duration of the meeting, drawing passersby and county employees enjoying a cigarette break to snap photos of the mega-vehicle, which is not only bullet-proof but is equipped with rear and front infrared cameras. The “demonstration” vehicle is very similar to the light-armored Canadian-made Gurkha vehicles used by the military. A Winthrop Harbor police official said the vehicle is part of the AIR-ONE Emergency Response Coalition which provides helicopter search and rescue services to law enforcement, emergency management and fire departments across the region.
