Police warn of rash of Waukegan burglaries

WAUKEGAN — A series of recent burglaries near Sunset Avenue and McAree Road where thieves kick in doors, and in one case assaulted a resident, has prompted police to warn residents to be alert to suspicious activity.

Police said there have been seven burglaries between Jan. 28 and Feb. 6, which occurred at different times of the day.

In one incident, a resident returned to find the back door forced open and when he went into the home, the burglars were still inside. They beat the resident, causing minor injuries.

“It could have been much worse,” police said.

The suspects in the burglaries simply kick down the doors to residences and then steal jewelry, electronics and cash. They are described as black males in their 30s and they have been seen in the area prior to and immediately after crimes have occurred.

They were wearing dark- colored hooded sweatshirts with the hood pulled over their head, obscuring their faces.

Waukegan Police Chief Dan Greathouse said residents need to notify police of any suspicious activity. If a resident observes any signs of a potential break-in to their home, such as a damaged or open door or window, they should not enter because the burglars may still be inside.

“Residents should call the police immediately and allow the police to enter the home to ensure the burglars are not still in the home. Jewelry or electronics are not worth your safety,” he said.
