WARREN TOWNSHIP — A 26-year-old Waukegan man died in a single-car accident early Saturday morning on Route 41 near Gurnee.
Lake County sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene at 3:46 a.m. southbound on Route 41 just south of Route 21 and found Michael Smith, Jr., of the 600 block of Elmwood Avenue, Waukegan, severely injured at the scene. The Lake County Coroner’s Office said Monday he was declared dead at the scene.
The Sheriff’s Office said Smith was southbound when he apparently lost control of his vehicle and collided with two trees on the south side of Route 41. The vehicle came to a rest at 35730 N. Skokie Highway, unincorporated Warren Township, which is a landscaping company called Van Landuyt Inc.
Police are investigating the cause of the accident to see if alcohol or drugs were involved. He was not wearing a seat belt.
