BEACH PARK — On the heels of shutting down one tavern, Mayor John Hucker has fined two stores for allegedly selling minors alcohol.
“Holding a liquor license is a privilege, not a right,” Hucker, who also is Beach Park liquor commissioner, said Tuesday. “License holders need to make sure they are complying with all appropriate laws and ordinances. Selling liquor to minors will simply not be tolerated.”
Two of the establishments were found guilty of selling liquor to minors during recent sweeps of license holders by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
Hucker fined Anna’s Marketplace and Car Wash/Kaloco Oil Co., 38512 N. Sheridan Road, $2,500 and a three-day suspension. It was the location’s second offense, he said. Hoeksema’s Mini-Mart, Inc., 38975 N. Lewis Ave., was fined $500.
“While I am encouraged by the steps both of these businesses have taken to prevent this from happening again, I feel the need to continue to lean hard on anyone found guilty of the illegal sale of liquor to minors,” the mayor said.
“I appreciate the fine job the Sheriff’s Office is doing on these compliance checks. It is making a difference.”
Hucker earlier this month pulled the liquor license of Cruisers Lounge at Beach and Sheridan roads.
