Over the years, Lake Forest High School has had close to 100 swimmers compete for a championship on the final day of the IHSA state meet for girls.
Zion-Benton has had one.
Both schools added to their totals, so to speak, at this year’s state finals, which were held earlier this month at Evanston High School.
For Lake Forest, fast-rising freshman Reilly Lanigan finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly and fifth in the 200 individual medley.
At state, the top six swimmers in preliminary races swim for the state title. So, Lanigan is the newest name on the Lake Forest girls swim state honor roll.
Zion-Benton now has one.
Junior diver Allegra Codamon finished fifth at state to become the first Zee-Bee ever to earn a medal at the IHSA finals.
Codamon, who has a background in gymnastics — Z-B does not have a gym team — actually led the competition after the preliminary round, but couldn’t make it happen in the finals.
The top two finishers at state were seniors, so she has a shot at making more Z-B history next year.
Also earning medals for top-six finishes at state were Mundelein sophomore Erin Falconer, Libertyville senior Morgan Dickson, Stevenson’s Julia Wawer and Stevenson’s 400 free relay team.
Dickson was the area’s top performer, finishing second by 1.5 seconds in the 500 free.
Last year, Dickson finished sixth in both the 200 and 500 freestyle races at state — events that both were won by Lake Forest star Rachel Stoehr.
Next year, Dickson will be swimming for the University of Tennessee.
This year, Stoehr is a member of the women’s swim team at the University of Arkansas. She competes in the 200 and 500 freestyles for the Razorbacks.
