True story about Sarah Beckman of Lindenhurst, a graduate of Lakes High School who now is a junior at Illinois State University in downstate Normal.
The first time her named appeared in this newspaper was NOT when she was competing in sports at Lake High School.
Rather it was way back on January 1, 2000. That morning, the then 8-year-old and her mom went “swimming” in frigid Lake Michigan as participants in the annual Polar Bear Plunge to raise money for charity.
Fast-forward to this month, and here’s the catch-up on an older — and presumably wiser — Sarah Beckman.
In addition to being a student at ISU, she’s the News and Sports Operations Director for the campus radio station — WZND.
Recently, she received the prestigious national Broadcast Education Association Walter S. Patterson Scholarship.
It’s awarded to an ISU student studying communication with hopes to pursue a career in broadcast radio.
The National Association of Broadcasters sponsors this $1,750 scholarship to commemorate a student who possesses high integrity and a well-articulated sense of personal and professional responsibility.
Beckman received the scholarship because she has demonstrated strong academic achievement in her major of Broadcast Journalism.
In her essay, Beckman detailed her work involvement at WZND (103.3 FM) and her in-depth news coverage on the Occupy Blo-No movement as a news reporter.
As News and Sports Operations Director, Beckman oversees the news and sports staff. She is in charge of preparing the special on-air newscasts, stories, and public service announcements. She also serves as a member of the Management Council.
Before becoming News and Sports Operations Director, Beckman was the Assistant Director of Promotions and a News staff member.
During her five-semester tenure at WZND, she won for Best Promotional Campaign at the 2012 Illinois Broadcasting Association University Student Convention. Her work in journalism helped her receive the Vicki Lynn Kelly Endowed Scholarship for Radio Broadcasting.
