OLD MILL CREEK — A missing Lake Villa man who authorities believed was suicidal was taken into custody late Thursday by Lake County sheriff’s deputies without incident after an air search.
Lake Villa police issued an alert Thursday for John Carlsen, 51, who had been missing since Wednesday. He had called a family member indicating he might harm himself, police said.
Authorities, who believed Carlsen had a gun, learned he was in the area of Route 45 and Miller Road in Old Mill Creek. A search and rescue helicopter from the AIR-ONE Emergency Response Coalition was requested to assist in locating Carlsen.
His vehicle was located by the helicopter near Crawford and Kelly roads in Old Mill Creek at 7:35 p.m. The chopper flight crew used an infrared scope, which detected body heat to pinpoint Carlsen’s location, a sheriff’s spokeswoman said.
At approximately 8:35 p.m., Carlsen was taken into custody without incident and was transported to an area hospital for mental evaluation.
The spokeswoman said there does not appear to be any applicable criminal charges.
