Sabonjian, Figeroa file for Waukegan mayor

WAUKEGAN — The field of candidates for the 2013 municipal elections will include incumbent Robert Sabonjian and Latino community liaison Susana Figueroa in the race for mayor, as both filed to run as independents prior to Wednesday’s deadline for submitting petitions.
Other independent candidates filing for a spot on the April 9 consolidated-election ballot were businessman Mark Drobnick for city clerk and former school board member Robert Taylor for treasurer.
The independent hopefuls will face the winners of the Feb. 26 party primaries, which will feature Democrats Sam Cunningham, Terry Link and Wayne Motley for mayor; Democrats Germain Castellanos, Cameron S. Harju, Janet Kilkelly, Thomas Koncan Jr., Elroy Reed and Art Yancey for clerk; and incumbent Democrat John Schwab for treasurer.
In North Chicago, the independent field will include Charles January for mayor and Kathy January for 7th Ward alderman. Also, Terry Harris filed to run as an independent for alderman in the 1st Ward, where he will face Democrat Ernest Fisher, the sole party candidate to file in the 1st Ward race.
Previously filing to run as Democrats in North Chicago were Bobby Allen, Anthony Coleman, Valerie De Vost and incumbent Leon Rockingham Jr. for mayor; Lori L. Collins for clerk; Kenneth Robinson for treasurer; Carl Evans, Caroline Harrington, Tiffiny S. Lear and Lorraine Thurmond for 3rd Ward alderman; and Torrance D. Abrams Sr., Kingston Neal and Marilyn Turner for 5th Ward Alderman. No Republicans filed in any of the races in either city.
