Garage fire spreads to Wauconda house, damage substantial

WAUCONDA TOWNSHIP — A 2-11 alarm fire in unincorporated Wauconda destroyed an attached garage and did some damage to the home Wednesday afternoon, but there were no injuries and the family escaped without a problem.
Wauconda Fire Department Battalion Chief Kevin Pyne said cause of the fire is undetermined and under investigation.
He said when firefighters first arrived on the scene at 26703 N. Main St., they found there was a lot of fire coming from the attached garage where a car was parked.
They attacked the garage fire, but some flames had made their way up toward the attic of the house.
“We kept it from spreading throughout the house,” he said. The home is not livable.
There was smoke damage, and upstairs firefighters had to tear some ceilings out to make sure the fire was extinguished in the attic.
There were also vents cut out of the roof.
Pyne said the house is for sale and damages could easily be a couple hundred thousand dollars.
There were 18 departments that responded to help fight the blaze.
One reason the fire was elevated to a 2-11 alarm was due to weather, which in the end turned out not to be much of a problem.
Wauconda Township Highway Department crews salted the roadway around the house. There were no injuries to firefighters slipping and falling while trying to fight the fire.
