VERNON HILLS — Police responded to Century Park at approximately 10:45 a.m. this morning to assist a 66-year-old man who fell into icy Big Bear Lake.
Officer Sharon Joseph said the man was not carrying identification and he was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville before his wallet could be retrieved from his vehicle. Police believe he resides in Wheeling.
The man was carrying fishing equipment and was reportedly meeting a friend at the lake. Joseph said the friend arrived after the fall and rallied bystanders to help pull the victim out of the water.
No injuries were reported from the fall. Joseph said the man was helped out of the water before police arrived on the scene, and that he was reportedly able to stand in the water, but unable to get out on his own.
Police do not know what the victim was doing when he stumbled into the icy water or how long he was in the water before being discovered and helped.
The Vernon Hills Park District prohibits ice skating and other winter activities on Big Bear Lake, but Joseph said the victim appeared to be fishing from the boat dock, which is permitted by the park district.
