A Lake County Sheriff’s Office deputy who diffused a domestic situation where a man was shooting a gun off, then aimed two weapons at his own head, has been named Deputy of the Year by the Illinois Sheriff’s Association.

Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran presented the award to 15-year veteran Deputy John Willer on Feb. 4 in Springfield. Curran nominated the deputy in November for his efforts and participation in the successful apprehension of an intoxicated man armed with two handguns.

Early last year, Willer was dispatched to a domestic-in-progress call which then quickly escalated into an intoxicated subject with a gun. Just before he arrived at the scene, he was advised by Lake County Sheriff’s Office Communications that the intoxicated subject was firing the weapon in his back yard.

Once there, he spotted the suspect right away walking toward the front of the home with two handguns, each pointed at his own head. Willer told his partner, who immediately took cover and maintained watch on the offender during the incident.

Willer then kept verbal communication with the armed man, and remained calm and professional while working through what could have been a tragic deadly force encounter, said Curran

“His quick action and professional approach to this situation was exemplary,” the sheriff said.

Willer’s career has included assignments to the Highway Patrol Division, Criminal Investigations Division, Kane-Cook Auto Theft Task Force, Tactical Response Team, Metropolitan Enforcement Group and tactical flight officer. He is currently assigned to the Highway Patrol Division, which also includes assignment to the Field Training Division where he is training newly graduated police academy recruits on how to serve Lake County residents.

Willer also received the Deputy of the Year Award in 2012 by the Waukegan Exchange Club.
