ANTIOCH — An off-duty police officer enjoying the Illinois High School Association sectional wrestling tournament last Saturday suddenly smelled something unusual for being in the Antioch High School gymnasium.
It was the strong odor of burning marijuana.
The officer was sitting in the bleachers when he smelled the pot, went down to investigate and found a man under the bleachers — where restless kids usually play during sporting events — allegedly smoking marijuana. He detained the man and called police.
An Antioch police officer arrested Warren Township High School special education teacher Peter Mulloy, 51, of 21947 Michelle Lane, Antioch, and charged him with unlawful possession of cannabis and unlawful possession of drug equipment. Police found a “one hitter” device that allows someone to take just “one hit” from a small pipe that usually fits into a box where ground-up marijuana is stored.
Mulloy was apparently there with his family and happened to smoke the “one hitter” right underneath where the off-duty police officer was sitting.
District 121 officials were unavailable for comment.
