LAKE BARRINGTON — An elderly man died in a fire Tuesday morning in the gated Lake Barrington Shores community.
Michael Ostrinsky, 75, was pronounced dead at 9:51 a.m. at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Lake Barrington, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
Ostrinsky was overcome by smoke due to the fire that originated in the kitchen. No foul play was suspected, the Coroner’s Office said. There were working smoke detectors in the unit, according to authorities.
Wauconda Fire Department Battalion Chief Kevin Pyne said Tuesday the department received a call at 8:50 a.m. for a structure fire at 612 Shoreline Road, a two-story, four-unit townhouse. Cause of the blaze is under investigation.
When firefighters arrived, residents of the building had been alerted by smoke detectors, but they knew one tenant had not made it out from the basement apartment, Unit C.
Firefighters went in and extinguished the fire and removed the victim. He was taken by ambulance to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, Lake Barrington, where he was pronounced dead.
“There’s heavy damage in there, but the damage was contained to just that residential unit,” Pyne said. “They’ve been at the scene taking pictures and are in the process of doing an investigation.”
The Illinois State Fire Marshal, Wauconda fire investigators and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the fire.
Because of the cold, extra units were called in for the box alarm. Greater Round Lake Area Fire District responded to the scene and other departments responded including Lake Zurich, Long Grove, Countryside, Barrington, Buffalo Grove and Fox River Grove.
