The Major Crash Assistance Team of Lake County is reconstructing an accident that killed a 61-year-old Elgin man and injured four others Sunday in Barrington Hills.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the dead man as Ronald Ziolo.
A Chevrolet Suburban traveling north on Route 59 sideswiped a southbound Toyota about 3 p.m., just south of Route 68, according to Barrington Hills police. The Suburban then struck a southbound Dodge Intrepid, driven by Ziolo, head-on and a Ford Escape was unable to avoid the accident and struck the rear of the Intrepid.
Police said Ziolo had a passenger, a 44-year-old female from Orlando, Fla., who was taken to St. Alexius Hospital in Hoffman Estates with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Suburban, an 18-year-old male from Barrington Hills, was transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, Lake Barrington, with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Toyota, the first vehicle that was hit, was a 57-year-old female who was treated and released at the scene. The driver of the Ford Escape that could not stop in time, a 44-year-old female from Fox River Grove and a 61-year-old male passenger, were both treated at Advocate Good Shepherd.
Barrington and Palatine Rural Fire departments responded to the scene, along with police from Barrington, South Barrington, Palatine and Fox River Grove who assisted on the scene because traffic had to be re-routed.
No charges have been filed in the case, and Barrington Hills police are investigating the crash with the Major Crash Assistance Team of Lake County.
