GURNEE — Two felons were arrested and a handgun seized after police stopped to help a driver who ran out of gas.
Gurnee police said Monday that at 6:50 p.m., March 2, an officer came upon an apparently disabled vehicle in the right lane of westbound Grand Avenue, east of Dilley’s Road. The officer made contact with the driver in the vehicle and the driver said that he had run out of gas and pointed to his friend who was across the street and approaching with a gas can.
At the time, the officer noted the odor of burnt marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. During a search of the vehicle for more marijuana, the officer located a loaded semi-automatic pistol.
Arrested were Christopher L. Porter, 28, of North Chicago, and Bonshe D. Reed, 34, of Zion.
Both men were charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and unlawful possession of a defaced firearm. Reed also was charged with being an armed habitual criminal.
Both men had previous felony convictions, police said.
