A grand jury approved first-degree murder charges Wednesday, April 24, for the two men accused of murdering a man over the angle of his hat.
Jose Garcia, 18, of Mundelein, and Jose Rebollar-Verara, 24, of Round Lake Park, are charged with shooting Gabriel Gonzales, 19, in the parking lot of a Round Lake Beach liquor store Sunday, March 10.
Rebollar-Verara, Garcia and an unknown third person were in the liquor store when Gonzales walked in wearing his baseball hat tilted, Assistant State’s Attorney Ken LaRue said.
Rebollar-Verara mistook Gonzales for a gang member and told Gonzales to adjust his hat, LaRue said.
The three men followed Gonzales out of the liquor store and Garcia fired a .22 caliber handgun 10 times Gonzales, LaRue said.
Rebollar-Verara and Garcia gave police confessions, LaRue said.
Garcia and Rebollar-Verara will have the opportunity to plead not guilty at their arraignments May 2. Both men are in custody at Lake County Jail in lieu of $3 million bonds.
