It’s a happy coincidence that Matt Potts’ name matches his chosen profession. He is the leader of Potts & Pans Steelband, which will visit the Arlington Heights Memorial Library, 500 N. Dunton Ave., 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 18.

“We specialize in the steel drum, an instrument from the Caribbean — from Trinidad and Tobago,” Potts said. “We were asked to give a performance at the library in January. That went really well but people had a ton of questions afterwards. This is a follow-up performance.

“We will be doing some more performing,” Potts continued, “but it’s really about spreading the education side of it and answering questions about the instrument — how it’s built, how it’s tuned.”

Potts is one of a handful of people in this country who can build and tune steel drums. Visitors can try the instrument.

Although all ages are welcome, this session is most appropriate for ages 8 and older.
