Alumni remember Santa Maria del Popolo School

Santa Maria del Popolo school alumni came out to Weich’s Inn in Mundelein Saturday to reconnect, play music, and remember their elementary school, which closed for good June 30.

The Archdiocese of Chicago announced six school closures earlier this year due to financial reasons, and Santa Maria del Popolo was among them. Located at 126 N. Lake St. in Mundelein, the school had educated Lake County children for 60 years.

Santa Maria alums Rob Porcelius (Class of 1982), Pat Donahoe (Class of 1984), Rob Aboucher, Class of 1979, Bill Abernathy (Class of 1984) and Paul Kasting (Class of 1983) all performed music at the event.

I was Class of '57 and the 1st. student to enroll in Santa Maria del Popolo when it was first built. I was in 3rd grade at S.M.D.P. after going to Diamond Lake Grammar School the 1st. two years. Wish we could have have known sooner. I've seen a few that were in school with me. It would have been fun.
