A 19-year-old Waukegan woman has been indicted on aggravated battery charges by a Lake County Grand Jury for allegedly severely injuring her six-month-old daughter because she was “frustrated.”
Yaritza Vargas, 19, is being held in Lake County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond and has been since her arrest following the July 7 incident.
Vargas is charged with aggravated battery to a child, a Class X felony, for her alleged actions on the morning of July 7 during and after she was giving the child a bath, according to reports.
The girl was admitted to the hospital with vaginal injuries severe enough to require surgery, as well as a leg fracture and other injuries to her face, arms and legs.
Officials said that she had called her boyfriend and complained that she was frustrated with the child. She was the sole caretaker of the little girl.
According to investigators’ reports, she allegedly said the child was squirming when she took her out of the bath and that some of the injuries were caused when she attempted to grab her leg and arm.
The child was taken to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan on the morning of the incident prior to being transferred to Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago for further treatment.
Vargas is scheduled for an Aug 15 arraignment.
