Two men brandishing handguns robbed the Supermercado Vargas grocery store at 814 S. Lake St. Friday morning, escaping with an undisclosed amount of money.
Part of Mundelein Commons was closed off with yellow police tape as evidence technicians searched for evidence inside the store.
Mundelein Police Department Deputy Chief Don Hansen said just before 10 a.m., two Latino males entered the store wearing dark clothing and ski-type masks. They ordered employees and customers to the ground and demanded money, which the owners handed over, he added.
No one was injured, police said.
Residents in the area provided information suggesting the offenders fled on foot traveling south from the store.
Because no one saw the suspects get into a vehicle, the police called in police dogs and the Air One helicopter to search the neighborhood west of the shopping center at Route 45 and Ridge Avenue.
The owners politely declined to be interviewed.
Police searched the nearby neighborhood for about three hours, near Route 45 to the intersection of Shady Lane and Ridge Avenue. At one point, a police dog tracked a scent to a home near Pleasant and Ridge, but Hansen said it turned out not to be a suspect. Near that intersection, police gave one of the thirsty canines water because of the temperatures and how long the dog had been tracking.
The search was called off just before 1 p.m. after police had searched a roughly five-block square area.
The investigation is ongoing, Hansen said.
Police said the suspects are described as two Latino males 20-25 years of age. One was described as 5-foot 7-inches with a stocky build and dark complexion. The other was 5-foot 9-inches with short, spiky hair, a thinner build and a medium complexion. There were no injuries in the armed robbery.
“The last armed robbery we had was over a year ago at U.S. Bank on Route 45,” said Hansen. “It’s not an everyday occurrence,” he added. The white male suspect in the bank robbery in December of last year has not been arrested.
