Both Waukegan Police and the Lake County Coroner’s office were saying little on Tuesday, Aug. 20, about a death of a 28-year-old woman over the weekend.
But officials confirmed that the death of Monica L. Williams is being investigated as a homicide.
According to a brief statement issued by police, patrol officers were dispatched around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 18, to the 200 block of West Drive near Washington Street and Green Bay Road.
Reports state that officers went to that location in an attempt to locate Williams following a request from “family members that had not heard from her.”
“Upon location, the patrol division located Williams lifeless,” the report stated. “Williams was pronounced dead on the scene. Her body was subsequently taken to the Lake County Coroner’s office.”
Waukegan Police Cmdr. Joe Florip said Tuesday that Williams lived in the area on West Drive where she was found. He added that investigators are withholding certain information beyond that, including the manner in which she died.
Chief deputy coroner Orlando Portillo said Tuesday that an autopsy has been completed in the case but no further information was available.
“We cannot give out any additional details because this is an active investigation by Waukegan police,” Portillo said.
The police statement said the case has been assigned to the department’s criminal investigations division, which was requesting assistance from anyone with information about Williams or who remembers seeing her recently.
