The Mo-Hawk Less Cancer Gives Back Motorcycle Benefit Ride and Jam is being held in loving memory of Waukegan Firefighter/Paramedic Kevin Oldham Sept. 7 at Jesse Oaks in Gages Lake.
What is C3FAC?
The Code 3 for a Cure Foundation (C3FAC) was formed by California Firefighter Lorenzo Abundiz After Lorenzo’s own personal battles with three different types of cancer (sarcoma, bladder and prostate) and witnessing many of his comrades suffer and die from the disease, Lorenzo felt compelled to form the C3FAC Foundation to help fight the war on all cancer.
Each year, Lorenzo Abundiz and the C3FAC team of firefighter cancer survivors drive a fire engine across America to share their personal cancer stories with fellow firefighters in order to encourage early cancer screenings and use of protective equipment. On the fire engine is an empty seat where they carry the memorial fire bell. The empty seat signifies the loss of a firefighter to cancer.
Throughout each mission, the team collects the names of firefighters across America who have died from cancer and they perform a fire bell ceremony for them after each mission. The ceremony is conducted at the Los Angeles Memorial Fire Station 27.
The C3FAC Team also responds to terminally ill firefighters who request to go on their last call on the C3FAC fire engine.

GAGES LAKE — Though Waukegan firefighter Kevin Oldham may have died from cancer several years ago, his spirit lives on. A benefit to help other firefighters battling the disease is being held in his memory on Saturday.
This annual event was initiated by Kevin and his family, including his parents, Theresa and Dan Oldham of Grayslake, during his battle with pancreatic cancer. Kevin was diagnosed in April of 2010 with stage IV inoperable pancreatic cancer. On March 11, 2011, the day before his mother’s birthday, 33-year-old Kevin succumbed to the disease.
The event, a motorcycle ride and jam will take place Sept. 7 at Jesse Oaks, 18490 W. Old Gages Lake Road, Gages Lake. Non-riders are welcome to join the party at 3 p.m. at Jesse Oaks which will include music by three bands, raffles and games, and the Grayslake Fire Department plans to bring a fire truck to the scene for kids to tour. The C3FAC firefighters will have a booth set up and will display the memorial fire bell. The memorial fire bell is carried across America in a fire truck during the annual mission of hope and honor. Special Item for the silent auction will be the C3FAC Fire Helmet autographed by Hollywood celebrity William Shatner.
There will be mohawk haircuts for men, women and children by hairstylists from Pascal Pour Elle hair salon in Glenview for $10 each.
“If they want, we will spray paint the mohawks purple,” said Theresa. Purple is the color of the fight for pancreatic cancer.
Kevin Oldham’s wife Katie, who lives in Pleasant Prairie, Wis., will be there with the couple’s young daugters, Evie and Stella. Katie will give a talk about Kevin and what it meant to him to help other firefighters fighting cancer.
“We’re hoping for at least 200 (motorcyclists),” said Theresa, secretary to the director of athletics at Warren Township High School.
He had been a Waukegan firefighter/paramedic for ten years. Fellow firefighters nicknamed him “Olds,” said Theresa of her only son. And because he liked having his hair fashioned into a mohawk cut whenever possible, he named the first fundraiser in 2010 “Mo-Hawk Less Cancer Gives Back.” His mother said it means “more” mohawks and less cancer.
Registeration for the event is from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sept. 7. The route for the event, which will take place rain or shine, is to be announced.
After the ride, motorcyclists will return to Jesse Oaks in the late afternoon. Cost is $20 per rider and $10 for passengers and includes an after-party. Proceeds will go to Code 3 For A Cure Foundation, a national 501c3 nonprofit organization helping cancer-stricken active and retired firefighters and their families.
