A local man who punched a Waukegan Police officer during a traffic stop and caused injuries that included multiple facial lacerations was arrested last week and charged with aggravated battery to a police officer.
Waukegan police report Miguel Guzman Sr. was taken into custody on the night of Sept. 5 following the incident outside his residence on the 800 block of Ash Street. He was remanded to Lake County Jail on $50,000 bond.
According to reports, the incident began around 8:15 p.m. when Officer Phil Hird of the department’s Neighborhood Policing Unit “observed a vehicle with an expired registration sticker and heard its excessively loud muffler.”
Hird reportedly stopped the vehicle, which police say was occupied by brothers Anthony Guzman and Miguel Guzman Jr. Anthony Guzman, the driver, allegedly exited the vehicle and refused orders to get back inside.

The report added that “it is unclear what, if any, weapon was used other than Miguel Guzman Sr.’s hand,” but the officer was transported to Vista Medical Center East with multiple lacerations. His treatment reportedly will require dental work.
