Highland Park police have requested the assistance of the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force and the Lake County Coroners’ Office in investigating the death of a 51-year-old Highland Park woman who was found dead in her Sheridan Road residence Tuesday evening of a single gunshot wound to the head.
In a statement issued about 10:40 a.m., police said “While the incident is being reported as, and has the appearance of a self-inflicted fatal injury, police are thoroughly investigating the incident.”
At about 8:30 a.m., Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner Orlando Portillo said the death “appears to be a suicide, but we’re still going to do an autopsy just to be sure.”
Portillo later added Wednesday: “Based on the findings it’s going to have to be further investigated by police and we are also waiting on the toxicology.”
Toxicology results can take a week or longer to be processed, and Portillo said the coroner’s office will have no other details until then.
Police responded to the residence on the 1400 block of Sheridan Road at about 6:45 p.m. Tuesday after the owner of the property in the 1400 block of Sheridan Road said he returned home to find his wife dead.
Responding officers found that the wife suffered an apparent single gunshot to the head. A weapon was recovered.
Police have expressed confidence there is no immediate danger to the community.
