The case of a 28-year-old woman killed in her apartment on Sunday, Aug. 18, in Waukegan has an air of mystery around it, but police said it has not turned into a cold case.
Monica Williams was found, stabbed according to neighbors, at her second-floor apartment in the 200 block of West Drive, which is north of Washington Street and west of Green Bay Road. Family members were worried when they could not reach her and called police who found her body.
At the time, the police and the Lake County Coroner’s Office had refused to say how she died because of the investigation, but neighbors said after police told them how it happened that the general public was not in danger. At least one next door neighbor never heard any disturbance until police arrived.
“This is not a cold case,” said Waukegan Police Comdr. Joe Florip. “We still have a detective assigned full time,” he said. A cold case is defined by having all the leads exhausted and no one assigned to the case.
“We are still waiting for some results from the crime laboratory,” he said. They expect to be able to develop more leads once they get the results back.
Neighbors of Williams said they were still unnerved by the incident a few weeks after the incident. At the time, small memorials, balloons and candles were placed near Williams’s apartment door.
Miranda Diaz, 33, said her children played with Williams’ two daughters and lived next door for about 5 years.
“She was pretty quiet and kept to herself,” Diaz said. “She didn’t get into anyone’s business and no one got into her business.”
Diaz said Williams’ daughters were dropped off Aug. 18 after a sleepover with friends, but no one answered the door at their home. The girls’ grandmother picked them up and brought them to her house, where she called police.
