A Round Lake man has been charged with DUI after he crashed his car into a Lake Villa police officer’s squad car, which was on patrol Sunday night.
The police officer, on patrol in the 37000 block of Fairfield Road in Lake Villa, was stopped in the northbound lanes of Fairfield, north of Apache Trail Road, when his squad was hit head-on by a 2002 Ford Focus that was southbound in the northbound lanes, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
The officer was taken to Vista Health System in Lindenhurst, where he was treated for minor injuries and released. The other driver, 34-year-old Alex Tapia-Aguilar, refused treatment at the scene, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.
Tapia-Aguilar was charged with two counts of DUI, two counts of aggravated DUI, and criminal damage to state supported property; and cited for no valid driver’s license, operating an uninsured vehicle, improper lane usage, and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
Tapia-Aguilar, of the 1200 block of Brentwood Drive in Round Lake, was ordered held on a $50,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 14.
