Families can enjoy a gentle introduction to camping at Family Campout, 5:30 p.m. June 29 to 9 a.m. June 30 at the Family Aquatic Center, 635 N. Aspen Drive, Vernon Hills.
“You’re not roughing it quite as much when you’re camping here,” said Marty Walsh, recreation supervisor of the Vernon Hills Park District.
Participants pitch their tents at the center’s picnic area.
“They get exclusive use of the Family Aquatic Center through the evening,” Walsh said. “We show a movie, ‘Madagascar 3,’ we’ll have a bonfire with s’mores and, on Sunday morning, we’ll wrap it all up with a pancake breakfast.”
Families can purchase dinner at the concession stand.
“It’s an event that we try not to program too much in terms of specific activities,” Walsh said. “We want people to get the experience of hanging out together as a family.”
The cost is $40 per family. Register in person at the Sullivan Center, 635 N. Aspen Drive.
