Where to cut your own Christmas tree

The following sites offer a variety of Christmas trees and holiday wreaths. Some offer crafts and other gift items, while others offer refreshments.

BEN’S CHRISTMAS TREE FARM: 7720 Ryan Road. Located at end of Ryan Road, just off Hunter Road, One-third mile north of Route 173, 4 miles west of Harvard. (630) 279-0216; Thousands of hand-pruned 6-14 foot Christmas Trees to choose from in eleven tree varieties. Fraser, Balsam, Concolor, Canaan and Nordman firs; Colorado Blue, Norway, Engelman and White Spruce trees. Scotch, White and Red Pine are available up to 14 feet. Table top trees 3-4 feet, hand made fresh Fraser Fir wreaths and garland, Christmas decorations, and boughs available.Pre cut trees are also available. Trees are organically grown, no chemicals or pesticides are used. Free horse drawn wagon rides and tractor, shaking and netting of trees, farm animals, Santa Claus and more. Open Fridays and weekends 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. all other Fridays through Dec. 20.

BEN’S FRASER FIR FARM: On Capron Road (Wooster Street) 7 miles west of Harvard and 1 mile south of the town of Capron and Route 173. (630) 279-3227; Featuring hand–pruned, organically grown Fraser firs from 6 to 10 feet tall. See listing for Ben’s Christmas Tree Farm for additional tree varieties and sizes. All trees are $8.75 per foot. Free hot chocolate and coffee in warming barn, shaking and netting of trees. Fresh, hand-made Fraser fir and Douglas fir wreaths, garland, and boughs. Saws and Twine provided at no charge. Open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through Dec. 11.

BILL’S CHRISTMAS TREE FARM: North Sheridan Road, Beach Park. (847) 623-1422 or (847) 770-1421. Specimen sheared Norway spruce and white spruce. Open weekdays through Dec. 24 from 8:30 a.m. to dusk by appointment. Baled and burlapped trees also available. Trees priced from $40. Call for appointment and directions. Bring rope.

BILL’S FRIENDLY CHRISTMAS TREE FARM: 3102 W. Miller Road, Spring Grove. (847) 770-1421. Located northwest of Fox Lake and Johnsburg. Take Route 12 from Fox Lake to Spring Grove Road, turn south and go two miles to Miller Road. Turn west on Miller and go a half-mile to the third large farm on the north side of the road, just east of the Stade Dairy Farm (watch for signs). Hours are weekends from 8:30 a.m. to dusk Saturdays and Sundays through Dec. 24 and by appointment weekends.

FAMILY CHRISTMAS TREE FARM: 24774 W. Petite Lake Road, Lake Villa. (847) 949-0172. Open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 26 and Saturday and Sunday through Dec. 19 and weekdays 1 to 4 p.m. through Dec. 24. On Route 59 at Petite Lake Road. Choose and cut Christmas trees, precut Christmas trees, tree baling. Petting zoo and hay rides.

GENGEL TREE FARM: 38614 N. Fairfield Road, Lake Villa. (847) 356-5661. One half mile north of Route 132. Limited supply of cut your own Scotch pines, Douglas firs and white pines. Pre-cut balsams and Fraiser firs up to 12 feet high. Open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through Dec. 19.

LAKE CUCHICACHI TREE FARM: 19505 W. State Line Road, Antioch. (847) 395-7919. One-quarter mile east of Route 45 and Illinois/Wisconsin state line. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday through Dec. 18. Blue Spruce, Concolor and Fraiser firs up to 20 feet tall. Smaller trees available.

PIONEER TREE FARM: 4614 N. Pioneer Road, near McHenry. (815) 385-8512. Organically grown Scotch pines and spruce are available. Open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 26, 27 and 28 and Dec. 4 and 5. Three miles north of McHenry on Pioneer Road, a mile off Route 31.

RICHARDSON CHRISTMAS TREES: 9407 Richardson Road, Spring Grove. (815) 675-9729. Turn off Route 12 at Richardson Road, go two miles north; or go six miles west of Antioch on Route 173, then turn south on Richardson Road and go 1 miles. Open daily 9 a.m. until dark Nov. 26 through Dec. 21. Wagon ride, doughnuts and a hot drink are available along with fresh garlands, centerpieces and wreaths and pre-cut trees. Those cutting their own can choose from thousands of Scotch and white pines, Douglas, Fraser and Canaan firs. Shaking, baling and indoor restrooms are available.

ST. BEDE CHURCH: Route 59 and Wilson Road, Ingleside. (847) 587-2251. Balsam, fir, white pine, spruce, Fraser fir. Live ornamental trees. Wreaths are also available. Delivery for a small donation. Proceeds will benefit the Knights of Columbus activities and St. Bede Church and school. Open From 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 26 and from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Weekends through Dec. 19. Open from 6 to 8 p.m. weekdays beginning Nov. 30 through Dec. 21.

TAMARACK FARMS: 6129 W. Broadway, corner of Route 173 and Broadway, Richmond. (815) 678-3500. Choose and cut your own Christmas tree for $55. Open from 10 a.m. to dusk Friday through Sunday Nov. 26 through Dec. 19. Warm refreshments available in the barn.
