GURNEE — Spa services have been part of the KeyLime Cove lineup since the indoor waterpark resort opened three years ago this spring. But, to date, things like skin treatments and manicures were only available to adults through KeyLime’s Paradise Mist Spa.

That changed last weekend with the opening of the Enchanted Lagoon Kids Spa, geared toward girls who might want to emulate their moms, but aren’t old enough to, say, drive themselves to the mall.

“This is for those girls who like to play with their mother’s makeup kit,” said Renee Mallari, director of the resort’s spa services, as she and her staff prepared to cut the ribbon last Friday on the undersea-themed facility, which is accented with aqua-colored shag rugs and tropical fish tanks.

“A lot of girls just want to feel a little more grown up, so they can be like their mom or their big sister,” Mallari added. “Maybe they’re not a teen, but they want to feel like one.”

Situated on the lower level near the food court and down a breezeway from the recently-expanded game room, the Enchanted Lagoon features manicures, pedicures, hairstyles, facials and makeup applications. Mallari said she and other KeyLime officials did their homework on kids’ spas at Disney and Nickelodeon Suites resorts, loking to emulate some of the services offered.

For example, pedicures and manicures at Enchanted Lagoon utilize ME! Bath’s ice cream-flavored polishes, so kids can have nails that smell like vanilla, chocolate, strawberry or papaya nectar. Hairstyle themes run the gamut from “rockstar” to “princess” to “mermaid luau,” and hair extensions or a tiara are included.

Along with spa services, the facility has a wall of retail items that include made-to-order lotions, sugar scrubs and lip glosses. ME! Bath lotions and Hot Focus makeup kits, hair accessories and journals.

“The hours flow with the waterpark, but people who want to get in are always safe if they call first,” said KeyLime spokeswoman Jennifer Evans. “People can walk in, but if they’ve got a small group, like a birthday, they can make a reservation.”

Asked if there’s a specific age range for Enchanted Lagoon clientele, Evans said one thing she and Mallari have been telling people is “it runs from toddlers to tweens.”

“We’ve had 3- and 4-year-olds all the way on up to 12,” Evans said. “Even at 3 years old, they’ll sit still for a polish change at that age.”
