Highland Park
Exhibit: David Dallison, a professional artist living in Waukegan for the last 6 years, is holding a family art show including his son and daughter titled “A Family Affair” through July 16 at The Art Center, 1957 Sheridan Road. David is a renowned editorial illustrator having been published in sports illustrated, Car and Driver, National Geographic, Newsweek, Smithsonian and many more. He has won the society of illustrators gold medal and has done 28 American postage stamps. His son and daughter have been making their livings as artists for the last 25 years. Exhibit: The Highland Park Historical Society will host a Quilt exhibition, “Crazy Quilts and More by Addie Mangoian Davis,” through Sept. 30, Wednesday through Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m., at its Museum, 326 Central Ave. The Museum has been chosen as one of more than a dozen anchor sites for the Northern Illinois Quilt Fest, which will span across the six northern counties of the state. Admission is $5, and special group tours are available upon request. Central Avenue will be decorated for a time with beautiful Barn Quilts which have colorful geometric quilt patterns painted on wood blocks, which blanket barns in rural areas across the country. In addition, a variety of other quilt-related events, including a speaker’s series, workshops, and appraisals will be held throughout the six-county Northern Illinois region. Performance: The Academy Citadel Theatre Summer Performance Camp will present “Seussical Jr. The Musical” July 6 at 6 p.m. and July 7 at 3 and 6 p.m. at Deer Path Middle School, 95 W. Deerpath. Competition: Local Big Air Dog Jumping Competition will be held July 8 at 6 p.m. at the X-Treme Dog Park at PNC Bank parking lot which backs up to the Libertyville Civic Center Parking lot, 135 W. Main St. Your dog can be one of ten local Newbie dogs that run down a 40’ dock and jump into a 27,000 gallon 20 x 40 foot pool. Open registration begins at noon. Festival: The annual Lake County Greek Fest will be held July 8, 9 and 10 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on the grounds of Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 1400 O’Plaine Road, between Routes 120 and 137). This year’s event will be a mix of Greek food including Lamb on the spit, Souvlakia (shish-kebab), Greek chicken, Gyros, Spanakopita (spinach pie), and more. Exhibit: The Waukegan Park District’s Division of Cultural Arts will host the art exhibit of Jan Von Bokel, an Effingham artist, for the months of July and August at Jack Benny Center for the Arts, 39 Jack Benny Drive-north entrance to Bowen Park. Ms. Von Bokel is currently working as a full time artist/teacher and designer of weather resistant art for the outdoors. Jan’s mixed media work uses an energetic and bold style. Festival: The Waukegan Park District’s Cultural Arts Division is celebrating the Japanese Star Festival - Tanabata July 7 from noon to 1 p.m. and 6 to 7 p.m. at Lilac Cottage, 1911 N. This festival takes place on the 7th day of the 7th month of the year, when according to legend, two stars, Altair and Vega, usually separated from each other by the Milky Way, are able to meet. Exhibit: Three local artists will be featured at the “Interpreting Outdoors” show from July 5 through Sept. 2 at the Undercroft Gallery in Christ Episcopal Church, 410 Grand Ave.The show will offer approximately 30 paintings and photographs of various nature scenes and landscapes by Korina (Korky) Shklair of Waukegan, and Len and Joan Messineo of Winthrop Harbor, all members of the Lake County Art League. Shklair began as a “self-taught” artist and has painted under the tutelage of Dorie Volpe through the Deer Path Art League. Len Messineo is an award-winning nature and wildlife photographer and lecturer, after retiring almost 20 years ago. His wife, Joan Messineo, has been dabbling with art for decades.
