1. Fund-raiser dance
The Lakes Area Swing Band will hold a fund-raiser dance Jan. 14 at the Antioch VFW, 75 North Ave. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the band plays from 7 to 10:30 p.m. The purpose of the dance is to raise scholarship funds for local area young musician and high school band programs. 2. Home expo
Home Building and Remodeling Expo will be held Jan. 14 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Jan. 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lake County Fairgrounds, 1060 E. Peterson Road, Grayslake. Home remodeling specialists will discuss ideas for turning a house into a dream home. 3. Blues concert
Blues Legend Ronnie Baker Brooks with Howard and the White Boys will perform Jan. 14 at 9 p.m. at Viper Alley, 275 Parkway Drive, Lincolnshire. Tickets are $10-40. Details, (847) 499-5000.
4. Finnish heritage
The area’s annual celebration of Finnish heritage will be held Sunday, Jan. 15 at 11 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 3350 N. Delany Road, Waukegan. This celebration is sponsored by the St. Mark’s Travel Club. A luncheon featuring ethnic foods including mojakka (beef vegetable soup), lanttu laatikko (rutabaga casserole), lihagyorykoita (meat balls), reika leipa (rye bread), pannukakku (custardy oven pancakes), pulla (braided yeast coffee bread) and makkara (sausage) will be served at 11 a.m., followed by entertainment with the Scandinavian musical group, Lekspel, as well as the Sibelius Male Chorus. Finnish items will be available for purchase at the ‘Tori’ and there will also be a 50/50 cash drawing. If you have a Finnish costume, you are encouraged to wear it. 5. Folk music
The Lake County Folk Club will present David HB Drake in concert Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. at Aleks’ Restaurant, 525 Rockland Road, Lake Bluff. David Drake is an award-winning folksinger with over 200 original songs. In addition to his own music, David has a vast, eclectic storehouse of songs at his fingertips that includes sea shanties and songs of the Seven Seas and Great Lakes, Irish ballads, children’s and family songs traditional folk music and folk classics from the ’60s.
