EVANSTON — NorthShore University HealthSystem was recognized recently as one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® by Truven Health Analytics. NorthShore has been named to the list 16 times, more than any hospital in the country during the award’s 20-year history.

“We are extraordinarily pleased to have received this prestigious national honor and to do so more times than any healthcare system in the country,” said Mark Neaman, president and CEO, NorthShore University HealthSystem.

The study evaluated 2,922 short-term, acute care, non-federal U.S. hospitals. It evaluated performance in 10 areas, including: Mortality; medical complications; patient safety; average patient stay; expenses; profitability; patient satisfaction; adherence to clinical standards of care; post-discharge mortality; and readmission rates for acute myocardial infarction (heart attack). failure and pneumonia.

“The winners of the 100 Top Hospitals award have brought even higher value to their local communities — better quality, higher efficiency and high patient perceptions of care,” said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president at Truven Health Analytics, a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of healthcare. “The key to success in a tumultuous environment is maintaining a hospital-wide culture of excellence that cuts across everything, from patient care to administration to adopting new technologies and techniques.”

Some of the proactive, tangible steps NorthShore has taken to display a system-wide culture of excellence include incorporating comprehensive electronic medical record and data informatics systems to help standardize best evidence-based clinical practices into effective and efficient patient care delivery plans. In addition, NorthShore became a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network last year — Mayo’s only collaboration of its kind in the Chicago region.
