Scholars: The Deerfield Park Foundation announced the winners of the 2013 Linda Gryziecki Scholarships. Deerfield High School senior Alyssha Glass was selected as the recipient of a $1,000 scholarship toward tuition as she pursues her higher education goals at Ohio State University during 2013-14. Mark Stern, a Deerfield High School graduate entering his sophomore year at Georgetown University, was selected as the recipient of the $1,000 college scholarship in the College Student division. The Scholarships is named after Linda Gryziecki who retired as Deerfield Park District’s Executive Director in 2011 after serving the District for 38 years. Selections are based on a combination of criteria including work and/or volunteer experience, community service, a minimum of a 3.0 out of 4.0 cumulative grade point average, application form submission with essay and letters of recommendation, and, for semi-finalists, an interview with a committee of Deerfield Park Foundation Directors.
Screenings: Spaulding School conducts preschool screenings on a regular basis during the school year. The screenings are for children who are 3,4 or 5 years of age. Children must live in Gurnee School District 56 to participate, and there is no charge for the screening. The next one scheduled will be held May 31 at 2000 Belle Plaine Road. Contest: “Cowgirlz” took 2nd place in the Countryside Fire District Middle School YouTube Video contest for Fire Safety & Burn Prevention. Fremont Middle School winners were Sammi Lococo, Kristi Chernesky, Kenzie Toland, and Annabello Schofield.
Rotary Club honorees: The Rotary Club of Waukegan recognized the city’s top graduating high school seniors week during it’s May membership meeting. “We’re in the presence of excellence, some outstanding young people who are excellent not because they were born that way, but because of actions they have taken, decisions they have made, opportunities they embraced,” said Waukegan High college counselor and Rotarian Chuck Gutman. Honorees include: St. Martin de Porres − Valedictorian Klarisza Padilla, Middlebury College, Middlebury, Vt.; co-Salutatorian Richy Pena, Georgetown University, Washington D.C.; co-Salutatorian Czie-Anne Gone, Loyola University, Chicago. Waukegan High School − Valedictorian Jennifer Panaguiton, Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio; co-Salutatorian Alejandro Martinez Jr., Washington University, St.Louis, Mo.; co-Salutatorian Maria Pettis, Pomona College, Claremont, Calif,; Gates Millennium Scholar Josue Pasillas, Pitzer College, Claremont, Calif.; girl’s track Ebony Smith, Eastern Illinois University; boy’s basketball DeVonte Taylor, Triton College.
