Author Visit: Meet author Alice LaPlante July 11 at noon. La Plante’s first novel, “Turn of Mind,” has received worldwide attention and rave reviews. It’s the story of Dr. Jennifer White, a once brilliant hand surgeon who suffers from dementia and who could have murdered her best friend. Told from Jennifer’s point of view, this haunting book is impossible to put down. Box lunches will be served. A book sale and signing will follow the program, courtesy of Lake Forest Book Store. Knitters: Work on your knitting or crochet projects July 12 at 7 p.m. Must be over 18 to attend.

Presentation: Join Bill Hinchliff for a fascinating slide presentation of three great Victorian cemeteries — Graceland, Rosehill and Oak Woods July 13 at 11:30 a.m. Registration required.

Movie Monsters: Get up close with Dracula, Wolfman and Frankenstein’s Monster as well as many other bone-chilling villains July 14 at 7 p.m. Join Steve Frenzel in this creepy celebration of classic movie monsters. Registration required.

Writing Workshop: Kids in grades 3 to 6 can participate in a creative writing workshop titled “It’s a Bird! It’s a Plane! It’s ...” and create a superhero story July 16 at 1 p.m. Registration required.

Gardening Help: The Master Gardeners will be available to answer questions as well as identify disease, insect and weed problems July 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Aspen Drive Library, 701 Aspen Drive, Vernon Hills, Bring your questions and plant, weed or insect samples if you have them. Samples should be enclosed in a plastic bag or container. Samples need to be fresh to obtain an accurate diagnosis.

Summer Salads: the chefs from Sunset Foods will present great ideas for summer salads using some of the freshest produce around July 12 at 7 p.m. at the Aspen Drive Library. Sampling is included. Registration required.

Performance: Ehrich Weisz, will perform as Harry Houdini July 13 at 1 p.m. at the Libertyville Civic Center, 135 W. Church St. Listen to the story of Houdini’s life and learn about the turn-of-the-century world that made him famous. The audience will be asked to participate as our presenter recreates some of Houdini’s magic and escapes. Registration required.

Cartoons: Children in grades 2 and up can be taught how to draw comics by local cartoonest Greg sitkowski July 14 at 4:15 p.m. at Aspen Drive Library. Registration required.

Author Visit: Author Jennifer Weiner will visit at Hawthorn Middle School North, 201 W. Hawthorn Parkway, Vernon Hills July 14 from 7-9 p.m.. Hear Weiner talk about her writing and her newest book, “Then Came You.” A question and answer session will follow along with a book signing. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. for book sales. This event is free but tickets will be required. Tickets will be handed out in advance at both the Cook Park and Aspen Drive locations beginning July 9 at 9 a.m. Ticket limit is 4.
