Visitation for a 19-year-old Antioch resident killed in a traffic accident on Interstate 94 near the Lake Forest Oasis will be held tonight.
Elizabeth “Lizzie” Collins of the 200 block of Forest Court was an Antioch High School graduate who was attending the College of Lake County and working in child care. She loved gymnastics and also taught the sport to children as young as 18 months.
Information on the fatal remains limited because the Illinois State Police crash reconstruction team is still investigating the five-car accident that occurred in the northbound lanes north of Route 22 just before 1 p.m. Jan. 5, when one vehicle lost control in the first snow of the season.
The driver of that vehicle was ticketed for driving too fast for conditions and could face further charges. No names were available.
Trooper Michelle Kistulinac, a State Police safety education officer, said after losing control, the vehicle crashed into another motorist. The car Collins was riding in and another vehicle collided trying to avoid the first accident and they went off the roadway.
But the two cars also hit a fifth vehicle, which had pulled over to the shoulder of the interstate to render assistance to the original crash, she said.
Collins was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center, Libertyville, where she died Friday just before midnight from multiple traumatic injuries from the accident, according to Lake County Coroner Artis Yancey.
Visitation for Collins will be today from 4 until 8 p.m. at Strang Funeral Home, 1055 Main St., followed Thursday by Mass at St. Peter Church, 557 Lake St., Antioch, Burial to follow in Hillside Cemetery, Antioch.
