WAUCONDA — For all the hand-breaded tilapia you want, head over to J&D’s Bar and Grill.

The regular fish fry is served all day and is $10. But if you go for lunch, you can have other fish dishes for $4.95.

Owner Jose Banuelos, who has owned J&D’s for about six months, said the tilapia fish fry served on Fridays is hand-breaded in house. It has become popular with locals and newcomers alike.

“This is the best, and customers agree,” he said. “We started doing fish frys one week after we opened and people love it.”

For Maureen Baier and her business partner/boyfriend Bob Farrell of Wauconda, searching for a local fish fry is essential.

“We love going to fish frys, and we’re always looking for new ones to try,” said Baier. “So we were happy when we found this place. I’d say we’ve been there about five times now.”

While Baier and Farrell, owners of a classic video game booth at the Volo Antique and Mercantile Mall, accidentally came upon the place, they later discovered friends and fellow employees have been going there, too.

“We would definitely recommend it,” said Baier.

Diners have the option of sitting at the bar, at a table and in warmer weather there’s an outdoor patio. The place also features pool tables for some fun, and there is often live entertainment.

“We get packed here on the weekends,” said bartender Denise Miller. From the special salads, sandwiches, burgers and wings, diners will no doubt be able to find their favorite dishes.

“Many of the meals are $10 (and below),” said Miller who remarked how much she enjoys working at J&D’s Bar and Grill .

For instance, last week there was ahi tuna, salmon and halibut on the menu. Sometimes swordfish, oysters, frog legs, marlin, onaga and pompano fish are also served. Now and then a chicken-and-rib combo is featured. And there’s always homemade soup of the day.

On Mondays and Tuesdays, diners can get wings for a quarter each. Wednesday is steak night for $10, and on Thursday and Saturday, there is a full slab of barbecued ribs for $10.
