Antioch

Exhibition: The Antioch Fine Art Gallery is offering cash prizes for the People’s Choice Award Exhibition to be displayed for the month of February in the White Room of the Gallery, 983 Main St. Award amounts vary from $25 to $100. Art may be dropped off during gallery hours Thursday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Art is due by Jan. 30. Grayslake

Auditions: Patriot Productions of Illinois will hold open auditions for “Born British, Died American, Reflections ... “ Jan. 30 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the College of Lake County, 19351 W. Washington St. This historical and witty play is based on Dr. Benjamin Franklin’s life and patriotic path. It is a three-act play with each act running approximately 30-minutes each. There will be a six-member cast. The production is also looking for an assistant director/stage manager. The positions will receive a base compensation plus a percent of box office sales. The David Adler Music and Arts Center is accepting enrollments for Session 1 Adult Watercolor Class. It will be offered for 6 weeks beginning Feb. 1 on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m., 1700 N. Milwaukee Ave. The class will provide detailed instruction on the varying techniques and skills required to paint in the medium. It is appropriate for adult students of all ages and skill levels. North Chicago

Meeting: During his Fifth Monday Meeting this month, Mayor Leon Rockingham is bringing in a representative from Northern Illinois Municipal Electric Collaborative (NIMEC) to offer information about the electric aggregation referendum that the city is placing on the upcoming March ballot Jan. 30 at 6 p.m. at North Chicago City Hall, 1850 Lewis Ave. Voting ‘yes’ on the March 20 referendum will allow the city to solicit lower electricity bids on behalf of its residents. Since the State of Illinois gave municipalities the authority to seek competitive quotes for residential and small business power costs, 19 cities in Illinois have already taken advantage of the process. Waukegan

Meeting and screening: Waukegan School District 60’s first Parent/Guardian Educational Workshops of 2012 will focus on health and substance abuse. Nicasa will present “How to talk to your family member about drug and alcohol abuse” Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Welcome Center, 742 W. Greenwood Ave. The sessions will be conducted in English and Spanish. Also, Rosalind Franklin University will conduct free health screenings Jan. 26 at 4 p.m. at the Waukegan Public Library, 128 N. County St. Health screenings will include BMI, blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol and foot. Pamphlets will also be available with tips about eating habits, risk factors for cancer and high blood pressure. Both events are free to parents/guardians of Waukegan Public Schools students. Resource fair: The Community Action Partnership (CAPOLC) of Lake County will hold its annual Head Start free Resource Fair Feb. 1 from 3 to 6 p.m. at CAPOLC, 1200 Glen Flora Ave. Representatives from several social and community agencies will provide resources and information in the following areas: education, counseling, human services, food bank, clothing, nutrition, rental/energy assistance, employment, disabilities/mental health, furniture, parenting/daycare, home care services, etc. For more information, call (847) 249-4330.

Wheeling

Fund-raiser: CASA Lake County will hold its annual fund-raising gala, CASAblanca 8: Black and Red Ball Feb. 4 at 6 p.m. at the Westin Chicago North Shore, 601 N. Milwaukee Ave. The evening will feature dinner, silent and live auctions, and dancing to the Roy Vombrack quartet. CASAblanca 8 will honor Kristi Savacool, co-chief executive officer of Aon Hewitt, with the 2012 Terri Zenner Award for Outstanding Service to Children and the Community. Aon Hewitt was CASA Lake County’s first corporate sponsor and has provided generous financial support to CASA since 2001. The gala chair is Mary T. Szela, senior vice president, Global Strategic Marketing and Services, at Abbott Laboratories. Abbott is the presenting sponsor for the event. Corey McPherrin, co-anchor of “Good Day Chicago” on WFLD-TV, Fox News, will be the master of ceremonies. Proceeds from CASAblanca 8 support Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Lake County, a nonprofit organization that recruits, trains and supervises community volunteers to advocate for the health, safety and best interests of abused and neglected children who are in the Lake County Juvenile Court system.
