Talk of the County

Tar sands

Regarding the article in TOTC referring to the Keystone Pipeline. The pipeline, besides being an environmental hazard because of its length and the risk of the lands in which it will run called the Canadian tar sands, is a very thick heavy tar and sand mixed with water. It will be shipped to Texas and then shipped overseas. Not all the Canadian oil that is coming into this country will be going for domestic use. If we developed our own resources we’d be a lot better off. Our resources are two oceans lying over large deposits of oil along with the Gulf of Mexico. The number of jobs that would be created is about 2,000 for two years and the permanent number of people on the pipeline is a lot less. Once it’s built you don’t need a lot of people standing around listening to the oil go through the pipes.

Endless elections

Here is another advantage of the truckloads of special interest money in the political process: Endless elections!

Too rich

Why do people think that Mitt Romney is too rich at $225 million when Warren Buffet is worth $40 billion and pays about 15 percent on his investment earnings just like Romney does?

Footprints in the snow

I got my gas bill that stated it was an “actual” reading, but there were no footprints in the snow and I had the gas turned off using the electric heater most of the time. But my bill equals last year’s bill to the penny. What meter reader is not doing his job?

Private-sector jobs

In 2011, 1.9 million private-sector jobs were created. This was better than seven out of the eight years that George W. Bush was president.

Best wishes, prayers

Let us send best wishes and prayers for our Sen. Mark Kirk’s recovery from his illness. We love you, Mark.

U.S. made

Thank you Menard’s for your recent flyer in the paper that indicated all the items that have been manufactured in the U.S.A. Customers can purchase these items knowing that they are helping companies in our country to stay in business. Great idea! Thank you and may your sales soar!

Race quotas

I’m upset at the person who is insisting that the North Shore Sanitary District be forced into hiring black and Hispanic workers just because we live in an area with a high minority population. There should not be any “race quotas” in hiring. If a white candidate is more qualified for a position, then that candidate should be hired. I work in employment law and I’m tired of minorities forcing out qualified candidates because of their race. If you want a job, get a degree and quit expecting whites to give you everything without working for it.

Felons’ records

I believe we felons should have opportunity and not be disqualified for employment because of a criminal past that happens to be older than seven years at which some companies require. It seems to me it’s a modern day form of discrimination among hiring companies that should be for growth and opportunity. How can we as a nation overcome such poverty along with crime when there’s no employment opportunity given to some. This is an outcry for employment opportunities to keep our young people out of the penitentiaries and also to keep our streets safe from senseless crimes. Opportunity should be available for everyone, even felons with records over seven years old.
