WAUKEGAN — A man with more than a dozen arrests for drugs and other criminal activity was arrested after a search warrant was served at his residence and police found a handgun, $5,000 in cash and over an ounce of heroin.

Jerrold Hayes, 43, of the 600 block of Walnut Street, was found to have 28.8 grams of heroin and a .32-caliber handgun.

He was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession with intent to deliver, unlawful possession with intent to deliver within 1,000 feet of a school (Lyons Science and Math Academy) and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, police said Thursday.

Hayes, who is originally from Chicago, has been arrested 15 times for drugs and other crimes. He was being held on $50,000 bond at Lake County jail.

“This was great police work. I urge all residents to contact the police to report suspected drug houses. Together, we can impact this criminal activity and hopefully remove this element from our community,” said Police Chief Dan Greathouse.
