‘Women Helping Women’: Three Democratic candidates are encouraging the public to be generous in supporting women in need this winter. West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison, Lake County Recorder of Deeds Mary Ellen Vanderventer and Lake County Board District 13 candidate Sandra Hart of Lake Bluff are spearheading a collection of personal care items to aid local charities. The drive will take place Feb. 4 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Sunset Foods, 825 S. Waukegan Road. Items collected will include shampoos, soaps, toothpaste, diapers and feminine hygiene products. Donations will benefit Catholic Charities and the Northern Illinois Center for Alcohol and Substance Abuse (NICASA). All three women are candidates in the March 20 primary election. New app: The city of Lake Forest and the village of Lake Bluff will launch the new Smartphone app “Live, Work, Play” on Wednesday, Feb. 1, to promote the use of services, resources and products that are available in Lake Forest and Lake Bluff. The app’s “Live” button lists municipal, school, local services, maps and community links. The “Work” button includes careers, businesses and train schedules. “Play” lists events, shopping, sports, food and drink, recreation and arts. The free app can be downloaded by searching for Lake Forest or Lake Bluff in the app store.

Luncheon: The guest speaker at a luncheon Feb. 8 sponsored by the Libertyville-Mundelein Community Associates of the Art Institute will be potter Neil Estrick at the White Deer Run Golf Clubhouse, 250 W. Greggs Parkway. He is the owner of the Neil Estrick Gallery in Grayslake. He will showcase pottery by artists from all over the country, including his own work, which has been shown in numerous national and international exhibitions. Estrick will discuss the trials and triumphs of owning a pottery studio and gallery. Part of his talk is a demonstration of his expertise in making pottery on the wheel.
