Matthew McCutcheon, who has been serving as Grayslake’s interim police chief, is expected to be named permanent chief at the next Village Board meeting Feb. 7.
Mayor Rhett Taylor said he would recommend McCutcheon for the job at that time. No opposition to the appointment is anticipated for the well-respected chief.
“I am pleased to recommend Matt McCutcheon to the Village Board based upon his years and depth of experience in policing, his 20 years of dedication to the safety and security of our Village, his familiarity with Grayslake’s innovative financial policies, and his extensive involvement with the community,” Taylor said Friday.
Over the past several months, the village conducted a national search for a new chief and more than 120 applicants applied. However, McCutcheon’s 21 years of service on the Grayslake Police Department, most of it in executive positions, convinced the decision-makers they had the right man already on staff.
McCutcheon has been serving as interim chief since last July when Larry Herzog retired after serving 13 years in the post. Prior to that he was serving in the key position of operations commander.
McCutcheon has been involved in transferring the department’s dispatch services to a central point in Glenview, led the department’s prestigious nationally recertified effort, and recently facilitated the integration of the village of Hainesville’s public safety services into the Grayslake Police Department.
