GURNEE — A Zion man is in bond court and a North Chicago woman was arrested by police after they allegedly stole a vehicle Wednesday while it was being warmed up in a parking lot at Gurnee Mills.

The vehicle’s owner was knocked to the ground and injured as they sped away.

The incident began when a 19-year-old woman from Round Lake Heights got off work at the mall and had her boyfriend pick her up and drive her to another part of the parking lot near Kohls where her car was parked. She started it and got back into her boyfriend’s car to wait while hers warmed up.

After a few minutes, they noticed a man and a women get into her car. The Round Lake Heights woman immediately went to her gray 2001 Honda Civic, opened the passenger side door and told them they were in her car, police said Friday.

In response, the male driver gunned the car in reverse, knocking the victim down with the open car door. She struck her head and injured her shoulder, police said.

The assailant backed the car into another parked car and drove away to a nearby restaurant parking lot where the pair got out and fled on foot. The woman went into the restaurant and called a friend to pick her up.

Police stopped that vehicle and took Noreen Patlan, 19, of North Chicago, into custody and charged her with criminal trespass to a vehicle and obstructing justice, a Class 4 felony, police said.

Christopher Lugo, 19, of Zion was located by Waukegan police Thursday night and taken into custody. He was turned over to Gurnee police who charged him with Class 3 felony theft, aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, and Class 4 felony criminal damage to property.

He is scheduled for bond court today, Jan. 28.
