Talk of the County

Hardship happens

To the selfless individual who so boldly claims people should not have children if they can’t afford diapers: I pray on your behalf you never come across a hardship or lose your job or never have that silver spoon removed from your precious mouth! Try donating money or volunteer sometime, you will actually see these “people” are decent humans who had tragedy strike where it hurts the most!

Deep cuts

The forest preserve cuts trees down to the ground and the tree trimmers that work on the power lines just trim them. Why don’t they cut them down to the ground?

Perceived loss

I read with some amusement a reader complaining in this column that WKRS is “a big part” of their life. If so, in and of itself how sad that is? But I have an obvious remedy to the reader’s perceived loss: Learn Spanish.

Hoosier earners

Indiana has just become a right-to- work state which means it’s a right-to-work-for-less state. Each worker will be earning $1,500 less per year.

Polish or Spanish

To the person that asked in TOTC if we would be angry if WKRS went Polish. Of course we would, Polish or Spanish. This is America and the language here is English.

Count your money

In response to the comment about the drive-through at the banks or credit unions and if they could pull up out of the way to count their money. When you go to the bank, you should count your money at the window because I’ve had two incidents where I was given the wrong amount of money and another time I was given somebody else’s drivers license and money. If I were to pull away I would have to go all the way around or in the bank.

Political junkets

In reply to the comment about the money that was being spent on President Obama’s vacation in Hawaii along with his family. While I agree it is a few dollars, but we all spend money on vacations. I got one better for you though. What about all these politicians, both in the House and the Senate, who go on all these junkets that are sponsored by the lobbyists. The politicians should eliminate any information from all of the lobbyists because we all know what they want is going to cost the U.S. taxpayer money. Take the information they need from the public taxpayers who would like this country run the way it should be and not the way lobbyists think it should be run.

Thanks, WKRS

For the past 50 plus years, your station has been informative, funny and accurate. The morning and evening news personalities are the best, so good luck to you all. Now we have only the ’LIP station in Kenosha.

Bush’s lies

During the 2003 State of the Union Address, President Bush stated that Iraq under Saddam Hussein had the capability of producing over 25,000 liters of anthrax, more than 38,000 liters of botulinum toxin, 500 tons of sarin, mustard gas and VX nerve agents. President Bush stated that Iraq had an advanced nuclear weapons program and had recently tried to purchase significant quantities of uranium from Africa. All of these statements were lies. This was amply proven when the United States invaded Iraq in March of 2003 and found no weapons of mass destruction. Someday, I hope that George W. Bush is held accountable for this.

Gobbledybunk

In regards to the Warren High School officials explanation for the firing of their coaching staff. For lack of a better word, this is pure unadulterated gobbledygook, plain bunk.

Library expansion

Regarding the Jan. 23 article about the new Warren-Newport Library and how they fixed it up, made a teen room and, in general, just expanded the library and made it better for their patrons. I congratulate them and hope that they enjoy their new library and can use it to their best benefit. I also want to give a slap on the wrist to Zion and Benton voters for not voting for their bond issue that would not have increased their taxes. Just take a look at what they did at Warren-Newport Library and how they can expand their library and use it for the citizens and not have any problems. But Zion couldn’t even pass the issue where it wouldn’t have cost them anymore money. We should look at Warren-Newport and see what we can do for Zion. You people that didn’t vote for the bond issue should be hanging your heads. We don’t have bookmobile service anymore or service on Friday and Saturday and it’s just a shame.

That’s Newt!

In the 1990s, Newt Gingrich contributed to civility in America politics by recommending that all Democrats be referred to as cowards, traitors, commies, godless and liars.

Size matters

I see a few of the politicians have their huge campaign signs out and for some reason they think big is better. We should be more impressed with their record and not the size of their sign.

Lost in space

Now I’ve heard everything. Newt Gingrich is portraying himself as John F. Kennedy by sending a colony to the moon. Mitt Romney shouldn’t slam it, he should just buy a spaceship for Newt Gingrich and have Rick Santorum and Ron Paul join the crew and send them all on their way.

Minority hiring

Regarding race quotas. I am personally upset with the hiring practices all over Lake County, including the North Shore Sanitary District and the Waukegan Park District to be specific. They have very finite numbers of minorities working for them, very minimal. Have you heard of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission? They are supposed to hire a specific amount of blacks and Hispanics. That’s the law. Maybe they need to investigate some of these places. The Lake County Board needs to stand up and do what’s right and implement minority hiring practices all over the county.

Your actions

To the fellow who’s looking for a job: Apparently you should have thought about that before you did the crime. That’s the trouble with America. You’re not responsible for your own actions.

It’s dragging

We need a term for the 14 days (or is it 114?) from the NFL playoffs to Super Bowl Sunday. How about “The Drags?”

Former inmates

The person that found it humorous that Former Inmates Striving Together (FIST) has adopted a section of roadway possibly should be supportive rather than finding them humorous. It is hard enough for a past inmate to try to turn their lives around without hitting a roadblock at every turn that they try to make in their lives. Some people have made mistakes at an early age and totally wished they could/would have done things differently. But, they didn’t. Now they are paying for it the rest of their lives. So give them a break and at least try and be somewhat supportive. Thirty years ago there were not that many “former inmates.” Maybe things were better then. Stop being so sarcastic, You have no idea what the person you are meeting or talking about is experiencing in their lives.

Bragging to the press

Americans being held hostage by these back cave countries may be in more danger now, not due to the SEALs rescuing them and killing their captors, but because of Obama rushing to report the event to the media. He’s responsible for that because it’s an election year. How many more lives could have been spared if he had been like the SEALs who killed bin Laden and kept quiet about it? He had a treasure trove of intelligence from this hide out and Obama instantly made it useless when he claimed his accomplishments. People praised him for doing what Bush couldn’t do and they still have no idea about what the consequences were of his bragging to the press.

On, Wisconsin

Run up spending and debt, raise taxes in the naming of balancing the budget, but then watch as deficits rise and your credit-rating falls anyway. That’s been the sad pattern in Europe, and now it’s hitting that mecca of tax-and-spend government known as Illinois. Yet, Mr. Walker, who balanced the Wisconsin budget without new taxes, is the governor facing a union-financed attempt to recall him from office this year. If Wisconsin voters want to see where a state ends up without the kind of reforms that Mr. Walker made, they need only look to Illinois.

Blue Hearts

Instead of giving Purple Hearts to the Gurnee police officers, they should have given Blue Hearts. It makes more sense.

Zion’s ills

It is an absolute embarrassment to read the headlines of what is going on in Zion. All of the politicians have run this city into the ground. We have the highest taxes in the richest county in the Midwest, yet the city is going broke. We get lawsuits from minor league teams for promises and we can’t deliver. We get public embarrassment for commissioners using a city shield that wasn’t authorized for use 25 five years ago. We have City Hall being appraised for sale, but yet the mayor is too “ill” to show up and do his job. We need to get rid of them all. Not one of them should be left with a job. We had over 300 teachers go on strike last month with only 20 of them actually living in our area. We can’t afford more. It’s time for change.

Me TV

Recently someone commented that the Republican Party was the best reality show on television. I have to agree. Even so, it is still so much more enjoyable than watching “An American Horror Story” starring President Obama and the Democrats. Fortunately, like the TV show, we will see a new cast this fall.

Out of touch

Regarding the article in TOTC “Too rich.” Nobody objects to Mitt Romney being too rich. But what many of us object to is that Warren Buffet, who is infinitely wealthy, seems to think that 15 percent in taxes is much too low. But Mitt Romney, who is very wealthy, thinks that paying 15 percent in taxes is too much. Mitt Romney is way out of touch with what most of us have to do for a living.
