Talk of the County

Updated: March 3, 2012 8:37AM

Dogs in the cold

How many people do you know who would leave dogs cooped up all year ’round in an outdoor pen, even in subfreezing weather? Aren’t there any city ordinances against this?

Reading while driving

The other morning a Wisconsin driver passed me on Route 41 doing in excess of 65 miles an hour with his interior lights on and a newspaper spread out in front of him. Kudos to the driver’s education instructors of Wisconsin to be able to teach that talent to those drivers. It again shows that police agencies in Illinois are not doing their job.

Pondering

Let’s see if I have this correct. You can be the most highly qualified, most-intelligent, most kid-friendly, the best-educated and most-articulate candidate for a teaching position in any school district in the state, but cannot get hired unless you join the union. Right so far? You can opt out if you pay your fair share, but to whom? Do you pay dues to the local for collective bargaining purposes, or to some state or national entity who uses the forced dues for political posturing you might not agree with? Is that fair? Do you not have the right to teach and work in Illinois without being forced to join something with which you do not agree? Hey, just some questions to ponder!

WKRS church service

WKRS’s Redeemer Lutheran Church services were from 9 to 10 a.m. on Sunday mornings for many, many years. It covered the Lake County area. Please consider putting it back on the air. I’m a Catholic and am a third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and that Lutheran church service was wonderful. I always enjoyed listening to Pastor John. Aren’t the Spanish people church people?

Change award name

Regarding the comment in the paper about Gurnee awarding police the Purple Heart. The Purple Heart was supposed to be awarded to military personal wounded in action after April 15, 1917. I’m not sure why Gurnee decided to steal that name, but I’d like to suggest that they change the name to the “Purple Donut” in honor of police officers wounded in action obtaining donuts from the local donut shop.

Obey the law

Thanks, Mayor Rockingham, for not naming Curtis Brame the interim police chief. He’s suing the hand that feeds him and he doesn’t even know city ordinances. If he did, he wouldn’t have a political sign in his front yard 90 days before the election.
