Plungers: The annual Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge to benefit Special Olympics Illinois presented by GEICO Will be held Feb. 26 at 1 p.m. at Lake Front Park in Fox Lake (847) 478-0935); and March 3 at 1 p.m. at Sunrise Beach in Lake Bluff ((630) 377-7250). The Polar Plunge series will kick off with a SUPER Plunge — where participants raise a minimum of $2,500 and plunge into Lake Michigan once an hour every hour for 24 hours Feb. 24-25 at Northwestern University’s North Beach in Evanston. Each plunger must collect a minimum of $75 in donations that will be used to support Special Olympics programs in Illinois. Individuals and teams can register for the plunge at http://www.plungeillinois.com. Each team member must raise the minimum of $75 in donations and all team members’ individual fund-raising totals will be merged to form a combined team total. Teams are placed into divisions based on size and are awarded prizes for the most money raised. All plungers will receive gifts, compete for prizes, and enjoy food and camaraderie. For every $500 a plunger raises, he/she will get an entry into the drawing for the grand prize. The Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run is the single largest year-round fund-raising vehicle benefiting Special Olympics Illinois.

YMCA programs: Registration for the wide variety of quality spring programs for the whole family offered at Lake County YMCA’s Vernon Hills and Waukegan branches opens up to the general public on Feb. 13. It’s the community’s opportunity to sign up for springtime activities that encourage the four core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility at Central Lake YMCA, 700 Lakeview Parkway in Vernon Hills, and Northern Lake YMCA, 2000 Western Ave. in Waukegan. Be sure to sign up by Feb. 19 to avoid higher late-registration fees for some classes.
