MUNDELEIN — Highlights from Carmel Catholic High School’s 50 years of history will be performed via song, dance and other varieties in the school’s upcoming annual fund-raising event.

A cast of about 50 students will perform what Carmel touts as Lake County’s biggest party this weekend, Feb. 10 and Feb. 11.

Carmel senior Peter Murphy, 17, is one of the cast members.

“Street Scenes is a huge part of the Carmel community,” the Hawthorn Woods resident said.

The student show’s cast includes drama students like himself, athletes, cheerleaders and more, he said.

Murphy said the cast started working on the show in August.

“If you’re going to see a Street Scenes show, this is the show to see. We went all-out this year. It’s really something to see,” Murphy said.

This is Carmel’s 38th annual Street Scenes production, according to general event chair John Lobaito of McHenry.

Lobaito said this year’s performance includes comedy, live music, a casino and good food.

“It’s an opportunity for people to come and see Carmel,” Lobaito said. “It’s all around Lake County’s largest party.”

The two-day event draws about 6,000 people, he estimated.

Part of the event’s tradition is to offer a free preview for senior citizens on the Sunday before the show. Grayslake resident Alex Rafferty was among more than 300 people who attended the Feb. 5 preview.

He sent six children to Carmel and has had at least six grandchildren graduate from the school.

“They have 100 percent graduation rate and 100 percent college acceptance rate. What more can you ask for your kids?” Rafferty said.

He called Street Scenes an “enjoyable” performance.

“The kids possess a great deal of talent. It’s an enjoyable way to pass the afternoon,” Rafferty said.

All Street Scenes proceeds are used to help keep school tuition down, according to Carmel President Judith Mucheck of Evanston. Street Scenes is the school’s biggest fund-raising event, she said.

“It allows us to open our doors to Lake County. There’s something for everybody, and people have a really good time — people keep coming back year after year,” Mucheck said.
