Spelling bee sectional dates set for Feb. 21-23

The annual Spelling Bee is under way in Lake County, with 124 students from public and private schools in Lake County participating in three spelling bee sectional contests.

Co-sponsored by Jelly Belly Candy Co. and the Lake County Regional Office of Education, three sectionals will be held from Feb. 21-23. Four finalists from each sectional will then compete in the Lake County Final Spelling Bee at College of Lake County on March 15.

One final winner will win a trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., to compete on June Mat 30 and 31. All expenses for the seven-day trip will be paid cooperatively by the sponsoring organizations.

The sectionals are scheduled as follows:

† Section 1: Feb. 22, South Park School. 1421 Hackberry Road, Deerfield.

† Section 2: Feb. 23, Forrestal Elementary School, 2833 W. Washington St., Great Lakes.

† Section 3: Feb. 21, Prairie Crossing Charter School, 1531 Jones Point Road, Grayslake.

Participants must arrive at their respective sectional site by 6:15 p.m. Students will not be allowed to be seated as contestants once the practice round begins.
