Great Lakes

Lecture: Great Lakes Naval Museum will host a free lecture on the 99th Pursuit Squadron and the creation of the Tuskegee Airmen Feb. 18 at 1 p.m. at Naval Station Great Lakes, 610 Farragut Ave. Speaker will be Mark Hanson, who is currently a curator at the Chanute Air Museum in Rantoul. The 99th Pursuit Squadron, the first of the Tuskegee Airmen, was activated at Chanute Field in Rantoul in March 1941 and by the end of 1941, the squadron was in Tuskegee, Ala. The 99th was sent overseas to North Africa in April 1943 and in June 1944, the 99th joined the 332nd Fighter group, and gave rise to the popular image of Tuskegee Airmen of World War II. Crossing repairs: The CN Railway has scheduled repairs of the Allanson Road grade crossing starting on Feb. 14 at 6 a.m. and concluding on or before Feb. 16 at 6:30 p.m. Repairs to the crossing will be made as quickly as possible. The complete road closure of Allanson Road at the crossing will be required for the duration of the project. The detour route coming from the east is Butterfield Road south to Route 60, west to Route 45 North; coming from the west, it is Route 45 South to Route 60, east to Butterfield Road North. Advance road closure signs will be displayed prior to the actual road closure.
