Talk of the County

Champion campaigner

Obama will go down in history as the champion campaigning and spending artist of the country.

A fair chance

I’m responding to the Feb. 14 article by Judy Masterson about the $37.7 million construction projects for Waukegan School District 60. I think that’s good and it’s about time that we started hiring the minorities here in Lake County, especially in the Waukegan and North Chicago areas. Everybody needs a fair chance. Hire the minority.

Antioch volunteers

The truth about Antioch Rescue Squad is that they are not a volunteer organization. They are a not-for-profit organization that hires paramedics to run the rescue squad. They bill for all calls which makes a profit that is divided amongst volunteer members at that organization. I will not donate one penny to the Antioch Rescue Squad.

Best in show

Here’s some good news for TOTC. Not one, but three dogs from Lake County, made it into the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in their breed division: A long-haired dachshund from Round Lake Beach and two dogs from Libertyville, a bearded collie and a basset hound. They didn’t make it into their next round, but they were beautiful dogs anyway and fun to watch.

What people think

Regarding the person who mentioned “Dumb stuff” and said never underestimate the power of stupid people who call in dumb stuff in the TOTC. I’m not stupid, but I very much enjoy reading what other people think.

Answer man

Here’s an answer for TOTC on Feb. 15: The Civilian Conservation Corps was instituted during the Depression in the 1930s to provide work for young men who couldn’t find a job otherwise. It did things like fix roads, build bridges and other things like that.

Rest of his life

Regarding the article on “North Chicagoan found guilty in beating cabbie to death in ’07. This guy is 23 years old now which means he was 17 or 18 years old at the time of his offense. For the murder charge they’re looking at 20 years to life and I hope the judge uses his wisdom to figure that this guy, who was barely an adult, chose to take somebody’s life over $35 to $45. The guy should be taken off the streets, put in prison where he can be treated as he treated other individuals and be abused on a daily basis for the rest of his life.

Bible says

To the person who said that in the Bible it doesn’t say anything about homosexuality. Romans 1:26-28, First Corinthians 6:9-10 do. Homosexuality is bad and they won’t go to heaven and people having sex out of wedlock is wrong. Sex is only supposed to be between a husband and wife. I hope this person will read the Bible because it seems like they haven’t been.

Illogical

In the Feb. 15 TOTC, someone said if the Catholic Church buys insurance then logic would dictate that the Catholic Church is providing for abortions. Logic is a word that is not in Washington, D.C.’s vocabulary.

Big Band sound

Frank Sinatra was labeled the voice which made women swoon. His voice can’t be compared to singers of today. Elvis, Sammy Davis and Dean Martian sounded flat compared to him. Incidentally, a few big bands that played at the Rink were Harry James, Eddie Howard, Artie Shaw and Tommy Dorsey.

CCC experience

About the request in the TOTC regarding The Civilian Conservation Corps. My dad was in the CCC, which was directed by the Army Corps of Engineers, and he was stationed in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in 1934 as a construction and camp bugler. The CCC kids wore World War I uniforms, lived in barracks and constructed bridges, roads, state park trails and so forth. He was paid $20 a month, sent $15 to my grandmother and kept $5 for himself. Overall, it was a good experience and they did a lot of wonderful work in state and national parks. Nothing but good memories from my dad’s stories of the CCC.

Dog pounds

This economy is in such bad shape. Who wants to pay for a city pound? Why should taxpayers have to pay for unwanted pets? Why do they have to employ, pay and provide benefits for someone to baby-sit animals? If it’s not claimed or sold, then euthanize it.

Good cop

The city of Waukegan is very fortunate to have the chief of police, Dan Greathouse. Even with the recent cuts to his department, the police force is consistently making positive headlines every day. His compassion for the job and for the general public is evident in his comments regarding the unfortunate incident at Fountain Square. His suggestion that PTSD should be recognized and confronted with the same fervor as we would any other enemy really hit the nail on the head. As an American, it broke my heart to learn of the circumstances on that fateful night. It is a shame to have lost one of our freedom fighters in this manner. With his demons at bay, may he finally rest in peace. Thank you to the Waukegan Police Department for taking the motto of “protect and serve” very seriously. We are very grateful to you all, for putting your lives on the line every day.

Waukegan’s beach

If that F.I.S.T. organization is going to start shuttling people down to the Waukegan beach, you better close the animal pound, hire a guy to start carding everyone and make sure they’re all city-sticker-buying citizens of this town because that’s what our lakefront is for — the people of this town. Other people from out of town can be shuttled to the state parks, not to the city beach because that’s what my city sticker money is for. If you don’t live in the area, go to a state park.

Another victim

Antioch politics has taken another victim. A man built a business under the assumption and promise that he would get a liquor license so he could make a go of it. After investing his money, he found out that because of politics, the Village Board won’t give him the liquor license. Then he committed suicide. Now I guess the trustees can sleep good at night because they might as well have pulled the trigger themselves. I don’t know if the family will sue or not, but I would find a good lawyer if I were them.
