Talk of the County

They’re reneging
Regarding your Feb. 11 editorial about the Fort Sheridan Golf Course. The golf course was a contractual agreement that the Lake County Forest Preserve made that they’re now reneging on. I wonder if they’re going to pull the same stunt on their commitment to maintain the military cemetery there? They agreed that they would maintain that cemetery in return for being given the golf course for $1. Now they’re saying they don’t want to do the golf course. When are they going to back out of maintaining the golf course? I think it’s time that they learn to stand up and do what they said they’re going to do.
Rights and privileges
Regarding Homeland Security. I think it was Benjamin Franklin who said that if any citizen gives up any of their rights and privileges for security they will soon find they have neither rights or privileges.
Bitter allies
The Catholic Church and the Republican Party — the perfect alliance of two groups of bitter old men.
Felons and guns
In the Feb. 18 News-Sun, there were two stories involving felons who had guns in their possession. One was from North Chicago, the other was from Waukegan. How do felons get guns? If they’re getting them this easily, then I want concealed carry in Illinois. It’s time state officials begin letting us protect ourselves, rather than making it easy for felons to get their hands on guns.
Whitney’s funeral
Why on earth was Kevin Costner at Whitney’s funeral delivering a eulogy? “The Bodyguard” was a movie, not reality! And everyone knows that Dolly Parton wrote that song. Bobby Brown was Whitney’s husband and the one she loved. God wouldn’t have turned Bobby away! People need to put down their remote controls and get a life!
Official language
This is for the person who said you need to speak English in the U.S. because that’s our language and that you need to speak English in order to vote. There is no official language in the U.S. and there never has been. If we were going to speak an official language for those native to this country, it would probably be some type of Native American dialect. There is no official language and I’m tired of hearing about it. Just another GOPer, grumpy old man.
Sweet pit bulls
It’s not the pit bulls, Rottweilers or German shepherds. It’s the people who teach and deal with them on a daily basis. They are the ones who cause them to be angry and mean, which applies to people as well. You shouldn’t ban pit bulls because there’s some really sweet pit bulls out there. You need to look at who’s affecting these creatures.
Make the change
Regarding the article concerning 14th Street and Sheridan Road being a county road. It should be out with the old and in with the new. So, we need to make that change.
Barking dog
So what can a neighbor do if their dog barks very early in the morning? We’ve told this owner that it’s waking my husband up (he works nights), but they don’t seem to care/ I’ve called the police and they say they will talk to them. But thus far, I’m not sure they have. These owners should go outside with their dogs to keep them from barking. Have some respect for other people. If anyone has a suggestion, let me know. Help!
School food
In reference to District 60 raises. I agree we need new board members for the next election year. The school board is writing grants for the students to have free breakfast and lunch, and the kids just throw the food in the garbage. Why aren’t they taking that money and using it to purchase books which is something that the kids need and can use? Food is thrown away on a daily basis; they don’t want it and it’s a waste of taxpayers’ money. Get rid of the school board.
Pay raises
Pertaining to the ComEd rate hikes, what about the county pay raises that Mary Cunningham, Angelo Kyle and Diane Hewitt took? We need to remember those raises when everybody else was getting cut. Remember them at election time.
Casino city
After reading all the controversy about where to locate a casino, whether it be in Waukegan or Park City, I’d like to offer an alternative. I believe the area in North Chicago on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Sheridan Road that the city has named Sheridan Crossing would be a appropriate location. That area is ready for development and North Chicago could sure use the funds.
Still Bush’s fault?
Gas is going to go over $4 a gallon, groceries are up 30 percent, home foreclosures are still at a record high, the real unemployment rate is over 9 percent, we are $15 trillion in debt and this is still Bush’s fault? If you vote for Obama this November, please write on your forehead with an indelible marker “toidi na m’I”, and look in the mirror every morning just for a reminder.
